Bates Motel Goes There in Season 3 Preview

Bates Motel

Compared to what you will see in this preview from A&E’s Bates Motel Season 3, the series has danced gently around one of the stories most insidious central themes: incest. Not only is Norman’s love for mother beginning to resemble lust, but Norman is being prepped for the role we know him best for: manager of Bates Motel.

The preview trailer, set to an eerie take on “All I ever needed”, shows various scenes of Norman (Freddie Highmore) getting way too close to Norma(Vera Farmiga),  and her not exactly resisting it. In fact you might take away that she even likes it. A lot.

Of course having a child with her own brother, Norma has lots of experience with incest so seeing her snuggling in bed with her 18-year old son isn’t that wild of a step. The question is, what impact would this all have on the already fractured psyche of Norman. Women he lusts after have a tendency to end up dead, could this be the season where Norman takes a big-boy step towards the iconic character we know so well from the Psycho films?

Dylan (Max Thieriot), the product of said incest, seems to also be putting himself in a dangerous position: between Norma and Norman. If Dylan’s objections intensify, so may the need to get him out of the picture and Norman is just the Psycho to carry out that act.

In the grand scheme of things, there is no need to think that the Bates Motel brain trust will rush too quickly into Psycho territory. The series has always been about the subtle transition of Norman the boy towards Norman the man, so while the preview focuses on the more lurid aspects of Norman’s back-story the series will no doubt find an overarching story to slow his progression towards madness.

Bates Motel returns March 9th at 9/8c on A&E.
