A lot of things changed — for the good and for the bad — in the season 4 finale of Scandal, but something very good happened for Portia de Rossi’s character, Elizabeth North: Fitz seemingly promoted her to his Chief of Staff and de Rossi has been bumped up to a series regular for next season.

Let’s rewind…. de Rossi joined Scandal in a recurring role during the 2014-15 as the Chair of the RNC. Recently, she came on as Mellie’s campaign chairperson during her run for the senate (a win she just celebrated in the finale). But Mellie gave into blackmail by Rowan and and provided him with the names of the grand jurors David had assembled to take down B613. The grand jurors got murdered and Mellie was inadvertently left with blood on her hands. Terrified, she went to Cyrus, who helped keep her role in this whole mess quiet.

But when Fitz discovered what Mellie and Cyrus had done, he kicked both of them out of his life, leaving a vacant Chief of Staff position. A position that Elizabeth was happy to take, if her moving into Cyrus’ old office is any indication.

Scandal will return for its fifth season this fall on Thursdays at 9:00 p.m. on ABC. For more on ABC’s fall schedule, click here.
