The Salvatore brothers have “mommy issues” on The Vampire Diaries.   Not only did Damon (Ian Somerhalder) rip out Malcolm’s heart last week, but Lily is retaliating and backing away from the truce that she negotiated with Stefan.

It is not an easy peace. Stefan (Paul Wesley), Caroline (Candice Accola King) and Matt (Zach Roerig) planted a bomb designed to blow up Lily’s “family” of Heretics, but they escaped and killed most of the people attending Matt’s graduation from the sheriff’s academy. Had Lily (guest star Annie Wersching) not returned from meeting Enzo (Michel Malarkey) in New York when she did, all of Mystic Falls would have fallen to the viciousness of the vampire/witch hybrids.

To avoid total destruction of his town, Stefan negotiated a truce with his mother. All of the residents of Mystic Falls were evacuated on a phony mining disaster excuse, and Stefan turned over the Salvatore home to his mother’s Heretics. Any remaining humans are fair game for the hybrids.

Damon and Bonnie (Kat Graham) returned from Amsterdam and Damon was none too happy that the Heretics were living in his home. He and Bonnie found Malcolm, Lily’s favorite Heretic, and Damon ripped out Malcolm’s heart.

Tonight, Lily is making plans to pay back her eldest son for his transgression while Stefan does what he can to keep the situation from spiraling further. With Enzo’s help, the Heretics take Caroline prisoner as retribution, and she finds out something shocking about Stefan’s past.

Could it have something to do with the similar scars that Stefan and the Heretic, Beau (Jaiden Kaine), have when Stefan wakes Damon three years from now?

Alaric (Matt Davis), still in possession of the pink stone that he had in Amsterdam, has a plan to bring deceased fiancée Jo from the Other Side.  He returns to Whitmore College and asks Bonnie for help. To make matters worse, Lily is looking for the stone.

With the rest of the Sheriff’s Department murdered by the Heretics, Matt is the sole remaining lawman and is forced to make a life or death decision. He may not be the only one before Lily is finished. One of the Heretics is having a little too much fun tormenting Caroline. Jealousy over Stefan, perhaps?

Tonight’s episode of The Vampire Diaries also stars Elizabeth Blackmore, Scarlett Byrne, Teressa Liane, Justice Leak, John Winscher and Devan Gerlach. “Never Let Me Go,” was written by Co-Executive Producer, Brian Young, and directed by Chris Grismer.

The Vampire Diaries airs tonight at 8pm ET/PT on The CW.
