The Vampire Diaries Season 7 Preview: Sneaking A Peekby Melissa J. L. Smith Sciuto / October 2, 2015
With less than a week to wait, fans of The Vampire Diaries will have a lot to see to this season.
For one thing, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) gets naked according to his Instagram feed (see below).
While more of Damon is always a good thing, it is not the only thing. The slow-burning relationship between Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice Accola) will continue to escalate. Executive Producer, Julie Plec, promises a “lot of twists and turns” for “Steroline.” Expect those twists to start in the Season 7 premiere as the couple teams up with new deputy, Matt (Zach Roerig), forming an alliance that could put one of them in a dangerous position.
Also, on the relationship front, the dynamic between Damon and Bonnie (Kat Graham) will take on its own path, sans Elena, now that Kai has trapped Elena (Nina Dobrev) in a “Sleeping Beauty” curse.
When Dobrev departed the show at the end of last season, the writers put her character in a coma. Elena will remain comatose until Bonnie dies.
Damon, being Damon, will love/hate/resent/snark at Bonnie as she follows the elder Salvatore and Alaric (Matt Davis) on their “drunk tour” across Europe.
Not only did Damon lose Elena for one lifetime, Kai killed Alaric’s pregnant fiancée Jo as the couple was exchanging vows. While the bromance brothers-in-grief are drinking their way across the continent to forget their lost loves, Bonnie is following them with her journal.
Bonnie promised Elena that she would keep a diary of everything that happens while her BFF is asleep so Elena will know what she missed while she was in the coma. (Well, it is The Vampire Diaries so it makes sense that a diary is involved.)
The relationship between Damon and the Bennett Witch will have its challenges in Season 7. While not necessarily romantic, the duo’s emotional attachment will grow.
Will Damon remain faithful to Elena for the next 60-to-70 years? Not a chance. This IS Damon Salvatore, after all.
Somerhalder expressed at Comic-Con that he is a big fan of working with Graham as the pair have the same coach and work in a similar manner. When they were trapped in the 1990s together, Damon and Bonnie became close friends with issues, but Bonnie sacrificed herself so Damon could return to Elena.
Somerhalder is welcoming the opportunity to bring back the naughty Damon full of volatility, sexiness and vitriol. While he is grateful to Bonnie, Damon’s emotions often lead him to the darkness. Again, this IS Damon Salvatore.
Without Elena as his moral compass, how dark will he go?
Plec promises that viewers will see the “old Damon” from Season 1 who easily crosses that moral line without engaging his conscience.
Also returning this season will be Enzo (Michael Malarkey) and Salvatore mom, Lily (Annie Wersching) and Lily’s Heretics. New on the canvas will be the vampire/witch hybrids that Lily considers her “real family.” Executive Producer Caroline Dries hopes that the Heretics will be the most villainous big-bads that the Mystic Falls crew has ever seen.
With Damon returning to his true evil self, villainy seems to be the watchword for Season 7. The premiere, “Day One of Twenty-Two Thousand, Give or Take”, was written by Dries.
The Vampire Diaries returns Thursday, October 8 at 8pm ET/PT on The CW.
